Landowner Confidentiality

This page explains how landowner confidentiality is protected within the Conservation Tracker. Many conservation datasets include sensitive private land information, and this application is designed to share useful conservation context while respecting privacy, data-sharing agreements, and program requirements.

Conservation efforts often take place on privately owned working lands. Protecting landowner confidentiality is essential for maintaining trust, supporting voluntary participation, and ensuring that conservation programs can continue to operate effectively.

Many of the datasets represented in the Conservation Tracker originate from partner organizations and conservation programs that include sensitive property-level information. These underlying records are not publicly available in full detail. As a result, this application displays conservation activity in a generalized and aggregated format.

Why Confidentiality Matters

Landowners participate in conservation programs voluntarily, and many agreements include expectations of privacy. Sharing detailed project boundaries, parcel identifiers, or landowner information could compromise confidentiality and discourage future participation.

How Privacy Is Protected

To ensure responsible data use, the Conservation Tracker applies multiple confidentiality safeguards, including:

  • Removing landowner names and personally identifying information
  • Excluding parcel boundaries and property ownership records
  • Generalizing project locations to broader areas
  • Aggregating data across programs or regions when needed
